At the Indian Hotel Company, our daily life happens mostly in the back. We are located specifically within the Engineering Department of the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi. Our spot is on S.P. Marg in the Diplomatic Enclave. It is a very high-end part of the city with lots of trees and big gates everywhere. But back in the engineering area, things are a lot more practical. We deal with the pipes, the wiring, and the heavy machinery that keeps the whole hotel running. There are tools laying around and a lot of noise from the generators. Being in Diplomatic Enclave means there is a lot of security around the perimeter, so getting to work involves a few checkpoints. The address is 2.S.P Marg. It’s a large property and sometimes it takes ten minutes just to walk from one side to the other. Our team is usually wearing work clothes and carrying wrenches or clipboards. We don’t see much of the fancy lobby or the guests. We just focus on the task at hand in the basement and the service corridors. The air is always a bit metallic smelling back here because of all the metal work we do. It’s a steady job and there is always something that needs fixing or checking. We’ve been part of this hotel structure for a long time. It’s just how the engineering side of things goes in a place this big.
