Our shop is over at M-53, right near the R.K Store in Batla House. It is a small place packed with tools, old pipes, and spare parts for air conditioners and heaters. If you come by to see us, you will probably see us covered in dust or grease from a job we just finished. The New Delhi heat is no joke, so we stay pretty busy most of the year. We are not a big corporation with fancy uniforms. It is just a few of us who know how to fix things when they stop working. We spend most of our time out at people’s houses or offices, climbing on roofs or messing with wiring in cramped corners. The shop is where we keep the heavy ladders and the refrigerant tanks. Sometimes the phone rings off the hook and we cannot get to everyone as fast as we would like, but we try our best to show up. It is a lot of heavy lifting and sweating in the sun. We have been in this spot for a while now, and the neighbors all know us. We do not have a receptionist or a nice waiting room. Usually, one of us is just sitting on a stool checking a motor. It is messy work and things do not always go right on the first try. We just keep at it until the machine starts blowing cold air again.
