Consultant

I’ve been working out of this spot at Shubham Apartment for a while now. Plot 37 in I.P. Extension is one of those places where everyone kind of knows everyone else after a few months. The office is really just a flat on the 65th number, and most days it’s pretty quiet except for when the neighbors are moving furniture or someone’s pressure cooker starts whistling down the hall. We do a lot of consulting work here, mostly sitting at a few mismatched desks with way too many papers piled up. Patparganj is a busy part of New Delhi, but once you get inside the gates here, it feels a lot slower. My chair squeaks every time I lean back, which I really should fix, but it’s become part of the background noise along with the hum of the old AC unit. We don’t have a fancy lobby or anything like that. People just come in, sit on the plastic chairs, and we talk about what needs to get done. It’s practical. Sometimes the lift stops working and we have to trudge up the stairs, which isn’t great in the summer heat, but it keeps us moving. It isn’t much to look at, but it’s where the work happens and we’ve got a good system going even if the files aren’t always in the right order. I like that I can walk to the local market for a samosa when the afternoon slump hits.
