Our place is tucked away in Anand Parbat, specifically Gali No 9 at N-24. If you’ve ever been to this part of town, you know it’s mostly small factories and workshops. The sound of machines is like background music that never stops. We get here early because the traffic on the main road gets bad later on. Inside the unit, it’s all about the work. We have a few machines running and there is always a bit of a smell of oil and metal in the air. It’s not a fancy office or anything like that. We have a small desk in the corner where we keep the papers, but mostly we are on our feet. The workers have been with us for years, so we all know how things go without having to talk too much. Lunch is usually eaten together on a small bench outside if the weather is okay. Sometimes the delivery trucks have a hard time getting into the narrow lane, so we end up carrying stuff to the main road ourselves. It builds some muscle, I guess. Gali No 9 is pretty busy during the day with people moving carts around. We just try to keep our head down and get the orders finished on time. When the power goes off, which happens sometimes, everything goes silent and it feels very strange for a few minutes. Then we just wait for the light to come back.
