We’re down here in Vittal, right near the CPCRI on the road to Puttur. You can’t miss the Mangala Mantapa nearby. Being South Canara Coconut Farmers Producer Company Limited means we spend a lot of time looking at trees. Coconuts are what we know. Most of us grew up with them. The rain here can be something else, sometimes it’s too much and sometimes we’re waiting for it. Our office is at #1/101. It’s a plain building. We don’t have much in the way of decoration. Just some chairs and a desk where we keep the records. We started this because doing everything alone was getting too difficult. It’s better when a few of us talk about the harvests together. Vittal is a quiet place mostly. We see a lot of the same faces every day. When the season is busy, we’re all out in the groves. When it’s slow, we’re at the shop or the office talking. We aren't trying to be some huge corporation. We just want to make sure the coconuts get sold okay and the trees stay healthy. It’s a lot of climbing and clearing. My hands are usually rough from the work. That’s just how it is. If you come by, you’ll probably find someone drinking tea and looking at the sky. It’s not fancy, but it’s our life here. We just take it one day at a time and do the work that needs doing. There is always a tree that needs attention.
