Vetri Cement Works

Our yard is called Vetri Cement Works and you can find it at No:73/2 on the Cuddalore Main Road. We are part of the Kuppanatham Post area in Virudhachalam Taluk. It’s a busy road with a lot of dust from the passing buses and trucks. We work outside mostly, under a few tin sheds. We make cement products like rings for wells and small pipes. My hands are always dry from the cement, no matter how much I wash them. We start work when the sun comes up because by midday it’s too hot to do much. We have a couple of dogs that hang out in the shade near the gate. People stop their bikes and come in to ask about prices. We don't have a printed price list; we just tell them based on what materials cost that week. The yard is usually quite messy with heaps of sand and broken bits of concrete here and there. We don't have any fancy marketing or a website. If you see our stuff on the side of the road and like it, you buy it. That’s the way we’ve always done things. My father started this and now I’m the one running the mixer. It’s a steady life and it keeps us busy. We don't ask for much more than that. We just focus on making things that are solid and won't break when people use them for their homes.
