S V N Matriculation Higher Secondary School is out in Saraswathi Nagar, which is part of the Kongapalayam area. It’s a local school that serves the families living in this part of town. We’ve got students from the primary level all the way up to higher secondary. The campus isn’t very big, but we use every bit of space we have for classrooms and a little yard. You’ll find that things are pretty informal here; we know most of the parents by their first names and see them at the local market. The school day starts early to beat the afternoon heat. Inside the rooms, you’ll see rows of desks and plenty of charts on the walls that the kids made themselves. We don’t have a lot of fancy staff meetings or corporate strategies. Instead, we just talk about which student is struggling and how we can help them pass their next test. It’s a hands-on kind of place. Sometimes the fans make too much noise or a window gets stuck, but we just fix it and keep going. We have a small library that’s mostly filled with old textbooks and a few storybooks the kids have donated over the years. It’s not a huge collection, but it gets used. The bell we use to signal the end of class is just a piece of metal a staff member hits with a hammer. We aren’t trying to compete with the big city schools. We just want to provide a solid place for learning in Kongapalayam.
