Vans Gypsum Pvt. Ltd. operates out of 9, 5th Cross Street in Shastri Nagar-Adyar. Adyar is a busy part of Chennai, and being on the 5th Cross Street means we get a mix of residential quiet and commercial noise. The building is an older one, and the salt air from being relatively close to the coast does a number on the metal shutters. We spend a lot of time moving gypsum boards around, and it gets pretty dusty in the warehouse area. The heat in the summer is something else, so the fans are always going at full blast. It’s a straightforward operation here. We have a few guys who have been with us for years, so they know the routine by heart. There isn't much formality in the office. People walk in, ask for what they need, and we see if we have it in stock. Sometimes the delivery trucks have a hard time navigating the narrower streets around here, which causes a bit of shouting and lots of reverse-honking. We don't have a fancy lobby or anything like that. It’s just a place where business happens between cups of strong coffee. We deal with the paperwork, manage the stock levels, and try to keep the humidity from ruining the materials. It’s honest work, even if it's not the most exciting thing in the world to talk about.
