You can find us at 249, Kamaraj Salai, where we have our fabrication setup. It is a straight-up workshop where we deal with iron, steel, and a lot of welding. Sri Kalkiram Fabricators is basically a place where we take metal rods and sheets and turn them into things like window grills, gates, or simple frames. The street outside, Kamaraj Salai, stays pretty busy with traffic and people going about their business. Inside the shop, it’s mostly the sound of the grinding machine or the sizzle of the welding torch. We wear the masks and gloves because the sparks fly everywhere when we are joining pieces together. It’s heavy work, and our backs often ache by the end of the day from lifting the iron pieces onto the workbench. We don’t have a fancy showroom; we just have the floor space where we lay out the designs and start cutting the metal to the right size. Sometimes a customer brings a rough drawing on a piece of paper, and we try to make it look like that. The floor is usually covered in metal shavings and small offcuts that we have to sweep up every evening. It is a bit cramped when we have a big project like a main gate going on, but we manage. Most of the time it’s just the smell of burnt metal and the steady work of getting things joined up right without worrying about being polished.
