My office is on the first floor of 6/11, Kapaleeswarar Koil Sannathi Street. It’s right in the heart of Mylapore, so you can often hear the temple bells and the general bustle of the street below. Being an FCA means I’ve been around the block a few times with accounting and tax work. The office isn't anything fancy, just a room with some sturdy shelves for all the files and a desk that’s usually buried under some paperwork. I handle a lot of the tax returns and audits for people in the neighborhood. It’s mostly just me here, though I have some help when the work gets to be too much. I spend a lot of time reading through the new tax notifications and trying to make sure everything is done correctly. People drop by after visiting the temple or while they are out doing their shopping. We sit and talk about the accounts while the ceiling fan hums along. It gets pretty crowded in here during the summer, but that’s just how it is in Chennai. I don’t have a big staff or a fancy website. I just keep track of the numbers for those who need it. The stairs up to the office are a bit steep, so you have to watch your step. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living, and I’ve been doing it in this same spot for years now.
