C Ethiraj & Co

You can find C Ethiraj & Co over at No 7/3, which is in the 2nd Lane of Th Road in Washermanpet. We are quite close to the Tondiarpet Clock Tower, which is the main landmark everyone uses to find us. This part of Chennai is incredibly old and the streets are very narrow. It’s a busy place with lots of small businesses squeezed together. Our shop has been in this lane for a long time. It’s a bit dark inside because the buildings are so close to each other, but it stays relatively cool even when the humidity is high outside. We usually have the doors wide open so people can see we are in and ready for work. There is always a lot of shouting and noise from the street, people selling things or moving carts around. We deal with our daily customers and keep track of the accounts in some big old books we have on the shelf. It’s not a high-tech operation by any means. We do things the way they have always been done in this family business. Sometimes the rain floods the lane a little bit, and we have to put up planks to keep the water out, but that’s just life in Washermanpet. We know most of the people who walk past every day and we say hello. It's just a normal way to run a shop.
