Zam Zam Furniture

Writing about the shop in Karambakkam. People walk in from the street. There's sawdust everywhere. It gets hot in the afternoons because the fan isn't that great. We’ve been here at Sri Ram Nagar 2nd street for a while now. The street is narrow so parking is a bit of a headache. Mostly we just deal with chairs and cupboards. Sometimes someone wants a custom bed but that takes time. We don't rush. The wood comes in on Wednesdays usually. My cousin helps out when he isn't busy with his other job. We drink tea from the corner stall twice a day. It’s a lot of lifting and moving things around. The floor is concrete and stained. You get used to the smell of varnish after a few hours. It’s not a fancy place with air conditioning or anything like that. We just have the stuff lined up so people can see what they are getting. Some days are slow and we just sit by the door watching the traffic. Other days three families come at once and it’s a mess. We try to keep things organized but the small space makes it hard. If you look for us, we are right at number 13 and 14. It’s a simple setup. Nothing too complicated goes on here. We just work and go home when the sun goes down. It is how my father did it and how we do it now.
