New Steel Centre

New Steel Centre is over at 38, Raghunayakulu Street. If you’ve ever been to this part of town, you know how crowded it gets with all the steel and hardware shops packed together. Our place is quite narrow, and we have stacks of metal rods and sheets lining the walls almost to the ceiling. It can be a bit tricky to walk through the shop without bumping into something. We spend a lot of time loading and unloading trucks that park right in the middle of the street. It’s a lot of physical work, and by the end of the day, we are usually pretty tired. The air always smells a bit like iron and rust. We have a small wooden desk near the front where we keep the ledger. We still write most things down by hand because it’s just faster for us. We don’t have air conditioning, so we keep the big shutters open all day. The noise from the street is constant, but it’s the rhythm of the market. We know most of the regulars who come by for a few kilos of this or that. We don’t have a website or anything like that. We just rely on the fact that we’ve been on Raghunayakulu Street for a long time and people know our face. We just try to be fair and get the metal moved. It’s a tough business, but it’s what we know.
