Nagappa Sculptors

If you come down to Narsinghpuram Street, just off Mount Road, you’ll find us at No. 10. The address is a bit confusing because of the old and new numbering, but we’ve been here at Nagappa Sculptors for a long time. The street is always full of people and the sounds of the city. Inside our space, things are a lot different. There’s dust everywhere from the stone and wood we work on. It’s a traditional kind of place. We don’t use a lot of fancy high-tech gadgets; it’s mostly just chisels, hammers, and our hands. You can see pieces in various stages of completion sitting around the floor. Some are just big blocks of stone, and others are almost finished. It’s slow work and you can’t really rush it. We have a few guys who have been carving since they were young. Sometimes people stop by just to watch for a minute through the open door. We don’t mind. Mount Road is so modern now with all the new shops, but our little corner on Narsinghpuram Street feels like it belongs to a different time. We don't do any advertising. The work just speaks for itself, and people come to us when they need something special made. It’s a humble way to make a living, but we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Just chipping away every day and trying to do right by the materials. It is hard work but we find it meaningful.
