Muthu Rice Shop

It is just a small place here on Cholan Street in Porur. My father started it a long time ago and now I run things mostly. We have different kinds of rice in big jute bags lined up against the wall. Some people come for just a kilo while others take the whole twenty-five kilo sack for their families. It gets a bit dusty inside because of the grain but that is how a rice shop is. We open early in the morning when the air is still cool and stay open until the street gets quiet at night. There is no air conditioning or fancy lights here, just some ceiling fans that make a lot of noise. People from around Vigneshwara Nager know us well. They walk in and usually tell me what they are cooking so I can point them to the right bag. Sometimes the delivery truck comes late and blocks the narrow street which makes the neighbors a bit annoyed, but we try to move the bags fast. I spend most of my day weighing things on the old scale and tying up plastic covers with thick twine. It is hard work on the back especially lifting those heavy bags every hour. We don’t have a website or anything like that. If you need rice you just come to number two on Cholan Street and talk to me. That is how we have always done it.
