If you know George Town in Madras, you know how tight and busy the streets are. Our place is on Muthumari Chetty Street, number 39/84. It is a very old part of the city, and the GPO is not too far away. We do import and export work, which basically means we are always dealing with goods coming in and out of the country. The office is small and feels a bit like a shop sometimes because of where we are located. There’s always noise from the street outside—cows, carts, bikes, and people shouting. It’s a very traditional way of doing business here. We don't have fancy leather chairs or big glass meeting rooms. It is more about sitting at a desk with a ledger or a computer and making sure the orders are right. The walls are a bit dusty, and we have heaps of files from years of trade. We know most of the other business owners on the street, and we usually stop for a tea at the corner shop in the morning. It’s a very local atmosphere, and everyone knows everyone else. The work can be a bit stressful when a shipment is delayed, but we just handle it as it comes. It’s just a normal, old-school business life in the middle of George Town.
