We are out at No 16 in the Sidco Industrial Estate in Thirumudivakkam. It’s exactly the kind of place you’d expect for an engineering firm. There is always the sound of heavy metal moving or some kind of machine running in the distance. The industrial estate is quite spread out, so it’s a bit of a trek to get here, but it’s where all the real work happens. At Makeright Engineers, we spend our days surrounded by tools, blueprints, and raw materials. The shop floor is usually a bit warmer than the office area, especially during the summer months in Chennai. We don’t spend much time worrying about how the place looks to outsiders. It’s more about having the right space for the lathes and the welding gear. Most of the staff have been here a long time, so we have a bit of a rhythm going. We start early to beat the worst of the heat and usually finish up as the sun starts going down. There is always a layer of fine dust on the windows, but that’s just part of being in an industrial zone. We keep a small area for tea and lunch breaks where we can sit for a minute and talk about things other than engineering. It’s a hardworking environment, and we wouldn't really have it any other way. It’s just us doing what we know how to do every day without complaining much about the noise.
