You can find Haneef Steel Agency over in Pudupet, near the new housing board. We are on Velayutha Achary Street, which is just off Mount Road. This whole area is famous for metal and old parts, so we fit right in. The shop is full of steel bars, sheets, and scraps. It’s heavy work, and our hands usually show it by the end of the day. There’s a lot of clanging and banging as we move the inventory around to get to what a customer needs. We don’t have a fancy display or anything like that. It’s mostly just piles of steel and a small desk where we do the math on a notepad. The street outside is narrow and usually crowded with carts and motorcycles. Sometimes it’s hard for a truck to get in to unload, so there is a bit of shouting and directing traffic. We’ve been in this spot for years, and we know most of the other shop owners on the block. We don’t do any big promotions. People come to us because they know we have the steel they need for their construction or repair jobs. It’s a basic business. We open early, we move metal, and we go home tired. It’s a tough trade, but it’s what we know. We don’t make it sound better than it is; it’s just steel and hard work for people who need materials.
