If you know Parrys in Chennai, you know how crowded Armenian Street can be. We are at 41/3, right in the thick of it. Trading steel in this area is a real challenge because of the narrow roads and the constant flow of people. We’ve been here for many years and have seen the neighborhood change, though the noise stays the same. Our shop is old and filled with different types of steel sections. We don't have much space, so we have to be very smart about how we stack the rods and plates. When a customer comes in, we often have to move three things just to get to the one they want. It is a lot of physical work. The air is always full of the smell of metal and old buildings. We deal with all sorts of people, from small contractors to local fabricators who need a few pieces of steel for a job. We don't use fancy marketing. Most of our business comes from people who have been buying from us for decades. We sit on old wooden chairs and do our calculations on paper pads. Armenian Street is a historic place, but for us, it is just where we work every day. It’s a tough environment but there is a certain rhythm to the chaos that we actually enjoy.
