Chandan Metal Industries

We are located over at 43, 11th Street in Nehru Nagar. This part of Tondiarpet is always pretty crowded with people and vehicles, and our workshop at Chandan Metal Industries is right in the middle of all that noise. You can usually hear the sound of metal being moved or machines working before you even see the front door. It’s a gritty kind of place, but that’s just how metal work is in this part of the city. We have stacks of raw material and finished bits scattered all over the floor. The floor is made of hard concrete and always has some metal dust or shavings on it by the end of the shift. We’ve been operating from this same street for a long time now. The guys working here have been together for years, so we don’t really need to say much to get the daily jobs done. It gets very loud and hot, especially during the humid afternoons. We don’t have an air-conditioned office or a nice place to sit; we just have a small wooden table in the corner with a ledger. We write almost everything down by hand in that book. The neighborhood knows us for the noise we make during the day, but nobody seems to mind it much. We’ve got some old machinery that we keep running with a bit of oil and regular maintenance every weekend. It’s not a high-tech factory with robots. It’s just a place where we put in the hours and get the metal pieces ready for delivery. When the day is over, we lock up the gates.
