Beekay Steel Industries

We’ve been here at 8, 4th Cross Street in Chennai for a while now. Most days start early because the sun gets so hot here in Tamil Nadu. Beekay Steel Industries is basically just us working with metal all day. It’s heavy work and the shop floor gets pretty loud when the machines are going. You can hear the clanging all the way down the street sometimes. We spend a lot of time moving inventory around and checking the stock. People come in looking for specific sizes and we try to find what they need in the stacks. It’s not a fancy office or anything like that. Just a lot of steel and a lot of dust. Sometimes the trucks get stuck in the narrow lane when they come to pick things up. That usually causes a bit of a headache for everyone on the block. We drink a lot of tea to keep going through the afternoon. The 600 045 area is busy, and we’re just one part of it. We don’t have any big speeches to make about what we do. We just cut the steel, load it up, and get it ready for the next person who needs it. It’s a job like any other, I suppose. Some days are slow and some days the phone won't stop ringing. That’s just how it goes here in Chennai. We’ve seen the neighborhood change a bit over the years.
