Barakath Steels

The shop is right here at 69, Gandhiji New Road. It isn't a huge place, but we manage to fit a lot of steel inside. Most mornings start with the sound of the shutters going up and a bit of tea from the stall down the street. The road gets quite busy around nine, so we try to get the heavy loading done early. We handle all sorts of steel rods, sheets, and bars. It is heavy work, honestly. Your hands get stained with iron dust by midday, and the floor is usually covered in small scraps. We have been in this part of town for quite some time now. People around Gandhiji New Road know where we are. We don’t have fancy displays or anything like that. Just racks of metal and a heavy cutting machine in the back that makes a lot of noise. Sometimes the rain leaks a little near the front door, but we just put a bucket down and keep going. Customers come in looking for specific lengths, and we do what we can to find what they need in the stack. It is a bit of a mess sometimes, but we know where everything is kept. That’s just how a steel yard works. We don’t spend much time on the computer, mostly just writing things down in the ledger and making sure the inventory is right. It is a simple life here on the road. The truck drivers usually complain about the parking, but we always find a way to get them loaded and back on their way.
