We work out of number 35 on Devaraja Mudali Street, right in the Park Town area of Chennai. It’s a very old and busy part of the city, and being near the Kandaswamy Temple means there is always something happening outside. Amar Bala Architects & Interior Designer is a small setup where we deal with a lot of house plans and decor ideas. The office is usually filled with samples of materials, different wood finishes, and piles of paper. It’s a bit cramped because we have so many things saved up from old projects, but we know where everything is. The street outside is narrow and can get quite crowded with people and scooters, especially during temple festivals. We spend our days drawing up layouts or talking to people about how they want their rooms to look. It’s a lot of sitting at the drafting table and sometimes going out to look at sites across Chennai. The humidity can be tough, but we have the windows open when there’s a breeze. Most of the folks who come to see us are looking for practical help with their homes or shops. We don’t use any high-tech gadgets for everything; a lot of it is still done with simple tools and honest conversations. If you can navigate the busy lanes of Park Town, you’ll find us easily enough near the temple landmark.
