S D Marbles & Granites is based out in Zirakpur. If you’ve ever been through this area, you know it’s full of stone yards and construction shops. Our place is basically a big open yard with a small office shed in the corner. There is dust everywhere because of the cutting and polishing that goes on nearby. We have slabs of marble and granite leaned up against each other in long rows. Some are very heavy and require the crane to move them around. It’s a noisy environment most of the time with trucks coming and going. We wear heavy boots because the ground is often uneven or wet from the water used in the stone cutting process. In the small office, we have a desk where we keep the invoices and a sample book of different stones. It’s not a fancy showroom with bright lights. Most people just walk around the yard with us to see the actual pieces of stone they are buying. The weather really affects our day. If it rains, the yard gets muddy and it’s hard to move the slabs. When it’s hot, the stone gets warm to the touch. We’ve been doing this in Zirakpur for years and we’ve seen the whole area grow up around us. It’s hard work and your hands get rough, but it is what we know. We just sell stone to people who need it for their houses.
