Gnanambika Mills Ltd.

Being on Mettupalayam Road means there’s always a lot of heavy traffic passing by. Gnanambika Mills Ltd. has been part of this landscape for quite some time now. The post office is right nearby, which is handy for us. It’s a large site, not like those tiny office units you see in the city center. You can hear the hum of machinery if you stand in the right spot. It’s a steady sound that you get used to after the first week. The air smells a bit different here, like old wood and fabric. We have a lot of space, which is good because we have a lot of things to move around. The staff usually gets in early before the sun gets too high. It’s a lot of walking back and forth between the different sections. We don't have many visitors, mostly just delivery trucks and the occasional contractor. The office part is functional, nothing more. We use old wooden desks that have probably been here since the place started. It’s not about looking modern for us. It’s about keeping the operations running. We take our breaks together and talk about the weather or the news. It’s a simple routine. When the whistle goes at the end of the shift, the place clears out pretty fast. Then it’s just the night watchman and the sound of the distant road traffic until morning comes again. We are just local people doing our jobs every day.
