Down here at the West Bengal Cement Works in Rajbandh, we are situated right near the Epip Plot. It is an industrial area, so there are always sounds of hammers, sirens, and heavy engines in the background. The humidity in this part of the country can be a real challenge, making the cement bags feel even heavier than they already are. We start our day when the mist is still hanging over the fields near the post office. The proximity to the railway lines is a big deal for us because that is how most of the raw material gets here. We spend a lot of hours on our feet, checking the seals on the bags and talking to the drivers who come from all over the eastern region. It is a gritty job, and your clothes are usually stained by the end of the first hour. We have a small canteen where we get our tea and talk about the local news or the weather. There is no corporate polish here; we are just a bunch of people trying to keep the machinery running and the supply moving out to the construction sites. The Rajbandh area is growing fast, and you can see new structures popping up everywhere you look. It is nice to know that the heavy work we do every day is literally the foundation for all those new homes and shops.
