V L Steel Corporation is located right at 100/2 Halasuru, near the Govind Halwai Chowk. If you know this area, you know how busy it gets with the sweets shops and the constant crowds. Our place is usually filled with the sound of metal moving and people shouting to be heard over the traffic outside. We’ve been at this spot for a while now, and the walls are covered in old calendars and notes we’ve scribbled over the years. The floor is mostly concrete and stays cool even when the sun is hitting the front of the shop. We keep our registers on a big wooden desk that's seen better days, but it’s sturdy. The chowk is a landmark for everyone around here, so we just tell people to look for the Halwai and they find us easily enough. Working with steel means our hands are usually dirty by noon, but nobody really minds. We keep a regular schedule, opening up when the rest of the market does. Lunch is usually brought from home and eaten quickly between orders. It gets pretty cramped inside when we have a lot of stock, so we have to move carefully. We aren't big on fancy decorations or anything. It’s just a practical workspace for what we do. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit outside on the steps until it comes back. That is just how life is for us at Halasuru.
