Our shop, Uttam Chand Sunder Lal, is right in the heart of Khari Baoli at 560-61, Katra Ishwar Bhawan. If you know Delhi, you know how crazy and packed this area is. It’s the biggest spice market around, and we’ve been part of it for a long time. The air here always smells like cumin, chili, and cardamom. Our place is old, with high ceilings and wooden counters that have seen a lot of use. We spend our days weighing out goods, talking to regular customers, and dealing with wholesalers. It’s a lot of shouting over the crowd and making sure the sacks are stacked properly. We don't have air conditioning or fancy displays. It’s just bags and boxes of products everywhere. Sometimes the goats or the rickshaws make it hard to even get to the door, but that’s just life in Khari Baoli. We take pride in knowing our stock well. If someone wants a specific grade of something, we can usually find it in the back. It’s a family-style environment where everyone chips in. We don't do much in the way of advertising. Most people find us because their fathers or grandfathers bought from us. It’s honest trade, done the same way it’s been done for years, through heat and dust and a lot of tea. We just keep going because it is what we know.
