About Uma Shankar Furniture – Furniture in Bengaluru
Down here on Delhi Road in Mylasandra, we’ve got our workshop and showroom. It’s right at 21/B1. You can usually hear the sawing and sanding before you even step inside. We make things out of wood, mostly chairs, tables, and cabinets that people need for their houses. It gets pretty dusty in the back where the guys are working, so we try to keep the front area a bit cleaner for visitors. We aren’t some big factory with machines doing everything. A lot of it is done by hand, so sometimes a piece takes a few days longer than we thought. Wood can be tricky like that. We use what we can get and try to make it sturdy so it doesn't wobble after a month. My uncle started this place years ago and now we just keep it going. There’s no fancy air conditioning here, just a couple of ceiling fans that hum all day long. Customers usually come by to look at the samples or ask if we can fix a broken leg on an old sofa. We have a lot of scrap wood piled up in the corner which the local kids sometimes take for school projects. It’s a simple business. We work when there’s an order and wait for the next one when things are quiet. The floor is usually covered in wood shavings by five in the evening, and we just sweep it up and start again the next morning.
