If you go down KK Marg in Byculla, you’ll find us at number 23 in Sanjay Nagar. Sri Lakshmi Ranganatha Rice Corner is basically just a big room filled with heavy bags of different kinds of rice. It smells like grain and dust in here, which is exactly how a rice shop should be. We’ve been sitting in this same spot for years, watching the street get busier and noisier. Most of our customers are folks from around the neighborhood who’ve been buying from us since their kids were small. We have the usual varieties, some from further away and some local stuff. We spend a lot of our time weighing out portions and tying up bags with that thick twine that gets everywhere. It’s heavy work, lugging those big sacks around, especially when it’s hot outside and the fans are just moving the warm air. We don't have any fancy displays or bright lights. It's just stacks of rice and a big old scale that we’ve had forever. Sometimes the delivery truck gets stuck in Byculla traffic and we have to wait around, but that gives us a chance to chat with whoever stops by. We aren't trying to change the world, we're just selling rice to people who need it for their dinner. It’s a steady job and we like being part of the daily routine for the families around here.
