Avenue Road is always a hive of activity, and we’re right there near New Tulsibaug on Bhau Maharaj Lane, at number 137. The air around our shop usually smells like spices and fried snacks. We spend our mornings preparing all the different condiments and getting everything ready for the daily rush. It’s a small space, so we have to be very organized with our jars and containers. Customers come in and out all day, some just for a small packet of something and others buying in bulk. We use traditional methods for a lot of what we do, so there’s a lot of grinding and mixing happening in the back. The counters are made of old wood and have been worn smooth over the years. We don’t have a lot of staff, just family and a couple of helpers who have been with us forever. It gets very crowded in the lane, especially when the delivery bikes are trying to squeeze past. We keep a close eye on our stock because things tend to sell out quickly. Sometimes we run out of things before the day is over, and we just have to tell people to come back tomorrow. It’s a simple, honest business. We just focus on the smells and the tastes that people around here seem to like. It’s noisy and busy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
