Sam Steels

Sam Steels is based out in Whitefield. It’s a big area, but we have our specific spot where we keep all the stock. We deal with a lot of heavy metal, so the place is mostly just a large shed with a concrete yard. It gets pretty loud when things are being moved around. Whitefield has changed from a quiet place to a very busy hub, but our work stays pretty much the same. We don't have a carpeted office or air conditioning. Most of the time, we are outside or in the open part of the building. There is a lot of iron dust around, so our clothes usually get dirty by noon. We don't use any complicated systems to track things. We have a big board where we write down what’s going out and what’s coming in. It’s a simple way to keep track of the piles of steel. People come here because they know we have what they need in the back. We don't do fancy presentations. If you want to see the steel, you just walk out into the yard with us. Sometimes the crane acts up, and we have to fix it ourselves. It’s a lot of physical work and not much sitting around. The sun gets hot in Whitefield, so we take plenty of breaks in the shade of the stacks. It is a noisy, dirty, but honest way to spend the day.
