S M S Rice Corner

S M S Rice Corner has been sitting here on B G Road for some time. If you know the Vijayashree Extreme building, we are right there in that 16/1 spot. It’s a bit of a dusty job, honestly. Carrying those twenty-five kilo bags of rice all day makes your back sore by evening. We have all sorts of rice stacked up in the corners, from the regular Sona Masuri people use every day to the longer grains for special times. The shop isn't very large, so we have to be careful how we stack everything so it doesn't fall over. Most of our morning is spent unloading trucks that come in from the mills. We don't do much advertising because Rabrindranath Tagore Nagar is a busy area and people just see us when they go to work. The floor is always a bit white from the rice dust, no matter how much we sweep it. We have a small desk in the corner where we keep the bills and a calculator that’s missing a button. It’s not a corporate office, just a place where people come to buy their monthly rice supply. Sometimes the rains make it hard because we have to move everything away from the door quickly so the bags don't get damp. We just keep the doors open and wait for the regulars to stop by on their way home from the office.
