We are based at 36/37 on Hospital Road, right in the Sukhsagar part of Chickpet. If you have ever been to Chickpet, you know how tight the streets are. Hospital Road is no different. There are carts and people everywhere, and the noise never really stops until very late at night. Our space is filled with boxes because of the export side of things. We are often moving crates around to make enough room for people to stand. The floor is concrete and has some cracks, but it holds up under the weight of the silk bundles. I have been working here for years and I still get confused by the shortcut lanes sometimes. We don't have a big window display like the shops on the main road. Most of our day is spent on the phone or checking the packing lists to make sure everything is where it should be. It gets very hot in the summer, so we keep a couple of old table fans running at the back. There’s a guy who sells spicy snacks right outside the door, and that smell is always drifting in. It’s a bit of a chaotic environment, but that is just how business goes in this part of town. We don't have a lot of space for sitting around. Most people who come in are in a hurry to get their stuff and move on before the traffic gets even worse.
