Our shop is on the second floor of Raja Market. You have to climb a narrow set of stairs to get to us. It's a very busy market, so there’s always shouting and the sound of trolleys moving. We’ve been in this spot for a long time now. The room is filled with stock from floor to ceiling. It’s a bit of a maze inside. We don't have a fancy showroom. If someone wants to see something, we just pull it off the shelf. It’s a very practical way of working. Most of our customers are regular people who have been coming to the market for decades. We sit on stools behind a wooden counter. There isn't any air conditioning, just a big ceiling fan that wobbles a bit. We don't do any advertising or social media stuff. The work keeps us busy enough as it is. We handle a lot of different items, mostly general trade things. It gets very hot in the afternoons, so we usually take a break then. The market has its own rhythm and we are just a small part of it. We know the other shopkeepers well. We help each other out when needed. It’s not a fancy life, but it’s our life. We just keep the books and make sure the customers get what they need. Some days the stock arrives late and we have to stay late to sort it, but that's just how the market works. We don't complain much.
