Down here in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, we run M G Fish Stall. It’s a pretty basic setup, just how we like it. The smell of the fish is the first thing you notice when you walk in, obviously. I get the ice ready early in the morning so everything stays cold. It’s a lot of heavy lifting with the crates coming off the trucks. Water gets everywhere on the floor, so I’m always wearing my rubber boots. The neighbors in Rajarajeshwari Nagar are mostly nice people. They come in and ask what’s good today, and I just tell them what looks fresh. I don’t try to talk anyone into anything they don’t want. Some days are slow and I just sit on my stool watching the cars go by. Other days it’s so busy I don’t even have time to eat my lunch. We’ve got the regular scales and the cutting boards. I spend a lot of time sharpening my knives because you can't work with dull tools. It’s messy work, getting scales all over your clothes and hair, but it pays the bills. My hands are always cold from the ice. We don’t have a website or anything like that, just the shop here. If the fish is good, people come back. That is pretty much the whole story of how we operate. We just stay busy and keep the fish on ice until it's sold.
