We have been here at 57 Infantry Road for quite some time now, working with wood and making pieces for people’s houses. Kawataka Furniture started small, and honestly, it still feels that way most days when we are covered in sawdust. The shop isn't anything fancy, just a place where we get the work done. We spend a lot of time measuring things out and making sure the joints fit right. Sometimes the wood doesn't behave like you want it to, which can be frustrating, but that’s just how it goes in this trade. We handle everything from simple chairs to bigger cupboards. There is usually a radio playing in the back while someone is sanding down a table top. Being on Infantry Road means it is easy for people to find us, though parking can be a bit of a nightmare during the day. We don't use big automated machines for everything; a lot of it is just hands and basic tools. It gets hot in the workshop in the afternoons, but we just push through. People come in with photos of what they want, and we tell them if it's possible or if we need to change something. It’s honest work, and we like seeing a finished piece finally leave the shop on the back of a tempo.
