We are over in Mothinagar, specifically on 6th B Cross near Hutchines Road. Most people just call this area the Bamboo Bazaar because of all the timber shops around. Our place is at number 15. We deal in steel. It’s heavy, dirty work. You’ll see stacks of rods and sheets piled up everywhere when you walk in. The ground is mostly dirt and bits of scrap metal. We don’t have a nice showroom with air conditioning. It’s just an open yard with a corrugated metal roof over the main parts to keep the rain off. The sound of metal hitting metal is something you get used to after a day or two. We have a couple of guys who handle the cutting and loading. They are strong and don't say much. We sell to builders and small shops mostly. People come by with their trucks, we weigh the steel, and then they head off. It's a straightforward way to make a living. We don't use any complicated software to track things, just some notebooks and a calculator. The traffic around St Thomas Town can be a nightmare in the evenings, so we try to get most of the heavy hauling done early. It’s a tough business but it’s what we know. We’ve been in this same spot for years and the neighbors know us by name. We just open up the gate, unload the stock, and wait for the customers.
