Kamal Steel & Jewellers

We are over on Saki Vihar Road in Prakash Nagar. The shop is a bit of a mix, as the name Kamal Steel & Jewellers suggests. We’ve got the heavier steel items on one side and the jewelry in the glass cases on the other. It’s an odd combination for some, but it’s how we’ve always done it at 977/A. My father started this business years ago, and I just took over the daily running of it recently. It’s a lot of work keeping everything clean, especially with the dust that comes in from the main road. The jewelry needs a lot of polishing to look right under the lights. People from the nearby blocks come in for all sorts of things, from a small gift for a wedding to something more practical for their kitchen. We spend a lot of time sitting and talking to customers about what they need. Sometimes we don't have exactly what they want in the shop, so we have to order it in for them. The back room is full of crates and boxes that I really need to sort through one of these days. It’s a local business, through and through. We know most of the people who walk past our door every morning. It’s not a fancy showroom like you’d find downtown, but it’s honest work. We open up early and close once the street starts to get quiet. It’s just how life is for us here.
