We operate out of Kalipalayam, over in the Mahada Colony area near RNA Park. It’s a dusty spot with plenty of space for the trucks to pull in and out. Most of our day is spent looking at clipboards and talking to the drivers who just came back from a long haul. The office is really just a small room with a heavy table and a few chairs that have seen better years. There’s always a faint smell of diesel and tire rubber in the air because the yard is right there. We don’t really have a reception desk; people just walk in and ask for whoever is handling the logs that day. Sometimes the trucks get delayed because of the rain or road closures, so we spend a lot of time drinking tea and waiting for updates. We’ve got piles of ledgers and old invoices stacked in the corners because filing everything takes forever. It’s not the kind of place where you’d wear a suit. Most of us are in boots and work clothes because things get messy. When the sun goes down, we turn on the big floodlights in the yard so the loading can finish up. It’s hard work and the hours are all over the place, but we’ve been doing this from this same spot for quite a while now.
