No. 43 Infantry Road is where we spend our days. It’s a busy part of town, so there is never any silence. We have furniture pieces everywhere, some finished and some just sitting there waiting for parts. The smell of wood and polish is pretty strong when you first walk in. We don’t have a big fancy display like the shops in the malls. It’s more of a working space where things move in and out constantly. The front window gets a lot of sun in the morning, which makes the showroom part of Smart Furnitures Bengaluru quite bright. We spend a lot of time moving chairs and tables around to make space for new arrivals. The back area is where we keep the tools and some spare hardware in mismatched tins. It’s a bit cluttered, to be honest. Our staff has been here a long time, so we just have our own way of doing things. Sometimes we get customers who are just lost and looking for the main road. We tell them where to go and get back to work. The floor is old wood that creaks in certain spots. We don’t have a uniform or anything, just regular clothes that we don’t mind getting a bit of sawdust on. It’s a straightforward business and we just try to keep up with the orders that come in every week. There is always something to lift or carry around this building.
