We’ve been set up here in Pune at Nana Peth for quite a while now. You can find us at S.H. Kadari Tower on the 2nd Cross, just behind the Gopalan Mall area. It gets pretty busy around here with all the traffic coming off Hosahalli Main Road, but we manage. Most days involve a lot of noise from the welding machines and the smell of cut metal. It’s what we do. We work on all sorts of iron and steel things that people need for their houses or shops. Sometimes it’s a simple window grill and other times it’s a big heavy gate that takes three of us to move. My father started doing this kind of work and I just stayed with it because it’s what I know. We don’t have a big fancy office with air conditioning. It’s just the workshop and the tools. People from around the neighborhood stop by to ask for small fixes or to get something measured. We try to get things done when we say we will, though sometimes the electricity goes out or materials take an extra day to arrive. That’s just how it goes in this part of town. If you’re walking behind the mall and hear the sound of a grinder, that’s probably us. We’ve seen the area change a lot over the years, but the work stays the same. Just cutting, bending, and joining metal day in and day out.
