B V Bhandarkar & Company is located at 125 Sultanpet. If you know Sultanpet, you know it’s one of the busiest and most crowded parts of the city. We’ve been here for decades, mostly dealing with paper and stationery on a wholesale level. Our building is quite old and doesn’t have much in the way of modern comforts. It’s just stacks and stacks of paper, cardboard, and envelopes. The air always feels a bit heavy with the smell of paper. We spend the whole day coordinating with coolies and truck drivers who are trying to navigate the narrow lanes of Sultanpet. It’s a lot of shouting to be heard over the noise of the traffic and the carts. We don’t have a fancy reception area. It’s just a wooden desk where we keep our books. We do everything the old-fashioned way, with a lot of phone calls and physical paperwork. Some of our customers have been buying from us for over thirty years. It’s a tough place to work because of the heat and the constant movement, but we’re used to it. We drink our tea standing up because there’s usually no place to sit. It’s just a busy wholesale business trying to get the right paper to the right people.
