Ashok Uppahar

You can find us at 38 Gandhi Nagar, right near the KG Circle in Bangalore. We are situated next to the Triveni Theater. It is a very busy spot because of all the moviegoers and people catching buses at the circle. We call the place Ashok Uppahar. It is a small eatery, mostly meant for people who want to stand and have a quick snack or a cup of coffee. We don't have much seating space, maybe just a couple of stools in the corner. I have been running this place since my younger days. The morning starts with making the sambar and getting the idli batter ready. It gets very hot inside because of the big stoves, and there isn't much ventilation. The noise from the theater crowds can be quite a lot, especially when a big movie is playing. We don't have any waiters in uniforms or anything like that. You just come to the counter, tell us what you want, and we give it to you on a steel plate. The sink is in the back and we are always washing dishes. It’s a fast-paced environment. I don't have time for fancy talk. We just focus on keeping the food hot and the coffee strong. A lot of office workers come here for their break because we are quick. It's not a place for a long dinner, just a place to fill your stomach and move on with your day.
