Down at 1 Hebbal Link Road in Chaokop, you’ll find our main spot. Andhra Karnataka Roadways has been running out of this area for quite some time. The road outside is always moving with traffic, especially being near the link road. It’s a dusty place because of all the heavy vehicles passing by, but we don’t mind the grime. Our office is a small building that stays cool enough even when it is baking outside. We have benches outside for the drivers to sit on while they wait for their paperwork to be cleared. Inside, there are stacks of registers and a very old telephone that still rings with a loud bell. We spend most of our hours tracking where the trucks are and making sure everything is moving between the states. It’s a lot of shouting sometimes, mostly over the engine noise from the street. We drink a lot of water and keep the windows open. The neighborhood around Chaokop is busy and there’s always a place nearby to grab a quick plate of food. We don't have any fancy uniforms or anything like that. We just wear what’s comfortable for a long day of work. The desk is covered in pens and old receipts. It’s a bit of a mess, but we know where everything is. When the sun goes down, the lights on the link road come on and that is usually when we start thinking about heading home.
