A W Telemobiles is over in JP Nagar, and like most shops around here, we deal with a lot of people coming in with broken things. We have a small glass counter that’s filled with all sorts of phones, some new and some that have seen a lot of use. The walls are lined with those plastic pegs holding charging cables, earphones, and colorful cases that people like to swap out. It’s a small space, so when three or four customers come in at once, it feels pretty full. We spend a lot of time under a bright desk lamp, using tiny screwdrivers to pry open phone backs or trying to clean out a charging port that’s full of pocket lint. There’s usually a pile of old SIM card packets and receipts near the register. We don’t do anything fancy with the decor; it’s just a place to get your phone fixed or buy a top-up card. The street outside in JP Nagar is always busy, so we hear a lot of honking while we’re trying to concentrate on small parts. Sometimes someone comes in just asking for directions or needing to make a quick call because their own battery died. We just keep the shop open and do what needs to be done, one screen repair at a time, until it’s time to pull down the shutter at night. Sometimes the lights flicker when the rain is heavy outside, but we just keep working.
