Kulti Bricks

We are located in Punuri, which is part of the Kulti area in Burdwan district. It’s a bit of a drive to get out here, but the space is perfect for making bricks. We’ve been doing this for a long time and it is pretty much all we know. The soil in this part of Burdwan is really good for the clay we need. We have a small group of local workers who come in every morning to help with the molding and the kilns. Since it’s outdoor work, the weather really dictates what we can do. When the rain starts, we have to stop and cover everything up. But when it’s dry and sunny, we are working from the crack of dawn until dark. You can see the smoke rising from our chimneys when we are firing a new batch of bricks. It is hot and dirty work, but it’s a good way to earn a living. We sell mostly to builders in the nearby villages and towns. They bring their own tractors or old trucks to load up their orders. We don't have a big office building, just a small shed with a couple of chairs and our record books. We spend a lot of time sitting there talking with the drivers and sharing a bit of news. It’s a tight community here and we are proud to be a part of it. We keep our heads down and just do the job.
