Vijay Mahajan Karyana Store

Ram Bagh is always a bit chaotic, especially being opposite Nandan Parking. People are always trying to find a spot for their cars and sometimes they block the entrance to our shop. I have to step out and ask them to move a little bit so my customers can get in. It’s Shop No. 4, nothing too special to look at from the outside. Inside, it’s just rows of karyana items. We sell a lot of cooking oil and sacks of grain. The ledger book stays on the desk, filled with scribbles of what needs to be ordered next week. I noticed the salt bags were running low today, so I had to call the supplier twice. He’s usually late anyway. The ceiling fan makes a clicking sound that I’ve grown used to over the years. Some days are slow and I just sit and watch the traffic go by. Other days, like before festivals, it’s so busy I don't even have time to eat my lunch properly. My wife brings me a tiffin around one o'clock, but it often stays cold on the shelf. That’s just part of running a local store in Amritsar. You don’t expect things to be perfect, you just keep the shelves full and the scale balanced for the next person who walks through the door. It’s a long day from nine in the morning until nine at night, but it keeps the house running.
