Shekhar General Store

You can find us in the Main Bazar area where Jagdambay Colony and Friends Colony meet. It is a very busy part of Majitha Road. There is always someone shouting or a scooter honking right outside. I have been running this general store for years and my back surely feels it some days. We have everything from notebooks for the school kids to big bags of rice for the households nearby. I try to keep the shop organized, but with so many items, things often end up in odd places. I spend a lot of time checking the expiry dates on the milk and bread because I do not want anyone getting something stale. The neighbors from the colony are good people. They tell me about their kids and their jobs while I weigh out their sugar. Sometimes I have to chase away the stray dogs that try to sleep in the shade of my awning. It is a lot of lifting and carrying, especially when the delivery trucks arrive and block the whole street. I usually eat my lunch sitting right there at the counter because there isn't really a break. If I close for even an hour, someone is bound to knock on the shutter. It is a constant cycle of buying and selling. I don't use any computer for the bills, just my old ledger and a pen. It works fine for us and the local folks in the bazaar.
