Sant General Store

Sant General Store is located in the Sultanwind area of Amritsar, specifically in the Main Bazar at Kot Mit. Being near the Gurdwara means we see a lot of people passing by all day long. The atmosphere here is very traditional and the streets are always full of life. We open the shutters early in the morning, usually around the time the prayers are finishing up. Our shop is filled with all sorts of things like spices, flour, cleaning supplies, and sweets for the kids. It is a bit of a tight squeeze inside when more than three people come in at once, but that is common in the old bazar. We have wooden shelves that go all the way to the ceiling, so we often have to use a small ladder to reach the top items. Sometimes the electricity goes out for a bit, but we just keep the doors open for the light. Amritsar can get very hot in the summer months, so the stone floor of the shop feels good. People come in not just to buy things but sometimes just to say hello and talk about the local news. We don't have big signs or bright lights, just the stuff people need for their kitchens and homes. It has been our way of life for years now. We know most of our neighbors by their names and what kind of tea they prefer to drink every day.
